1.               Travel insurance is often neglected when planning a holiday or business trip. In Britain we are used to a free healthcare system and often forget that in many countries this is not the case.      We tend to not realise that luggage can be lost at an airport and that pick-pockets operate in Lisbon as well as London. Most of the time, travel insurance acts as a peace of mind…right up to the time you need it and then it can be the most important article in your suitcase.

              When in a foreign country and hiring a car try to know the local traffic laws. We drive on the left in the UK, not too many countries follow suit on this. In Canada they drive on the right hand side.   If you cause an accident, personal liability may be an issue. A good travel insurance policy will also have a clause that allows travel back to the UK if a medical emergency arises.

What Should I Look For In Travel Insurance

              Travel insurance is a safety net when abroad. A good travel insurance policy should cover you for medical and health cover for an injury or sudden illness abroad, 24 hour emergency service and assistance and personal liability cover in case you are sued for causing injury or damaging property.

              Other things to consider when purchasing travel insurance are, what is the value of your lost and stolen possessions cover? What’s the maximum you can claim on a single piece of your inventory? Are you covered for cancellation and/or curtailment of your flight or ferry? Does your policy have extra cover for activities that are usually not included standard policies, such as jet skiing or adventure activities? Are there any financial insurances in case your carrier airline becomes bankrupt before or during your excursion abroad?

              For the vast majority of tourist area’s, Canada is a safe place to visit. There will sadly be the threat from pick-pockets however, so keep any money or important documentation in a zipped or fastened pocket. Should your wallet or purse be stolen, your travel insurance will be able to cover the losses if it’s included in your travel insurance policy. .

              Medical care in Canada is normally in the form of private health care. In effect, you will have to pay for all treatment costs, travel insurance will usually help cover the cost, but full medical insurance is advised also.

              Like it’s southern neighbour America; Canada has a risk of terrorist attacks.   In high profile public places it is recommended that you maintain a high level of vigilance. Travel insurance will help you return to the UK, if terrorist attacks are covered by your policy, although it will be delayed during the inevitable investigations following an attack.

              Natural disasters do occur in Canada, though they are widely known about and are normally weather based. Heavy snow can close rural roads and occasionally free ways during the winter months. Luckily Canada is much more used to snowfall than the UK and can quickly clear roads and maintain its internal networks. Earthquakes do occur on the Canadian West coast and unlike weather based environmental events there is often little warning.

There is any number of winter sports available on either coast, skiing, snowboarding, bob sledging and the luge.   There are fantastic natural attractions such as Niagara falls and the mountain ranges in Banff and Jasper. Due to the wide variety of activities it’s possible to undertake, it is important that any activities you are planning on taking part in are covered by your travel insurance policy. Be prepared to use common sense again though, if using equipment such as ski’s or snowboarding, check that it is in a state of good repair and that any instructors or guides are fully qualified.

              Sadly there is no real uniform code of laws governing the Canada. The laws differ from province to province as do the penalties incurred. Generally speaking, the legal age for alcohol consumption is 19 years old, and driving is normally 16 years old with a valid permit.

              Hire cars are subject to the same vigilance as any other product on visiting a foreign country. Check that its in good, road legal condition and that it suits your purpose in visiting Canada.   Travel insurance will normally cover you for accidents to other persons, called personal liability. This often will include third party insurance for hire cars, although this will not be considered to be car insurance if stopped by the police.

              It is to be strongly recommended that when in Canada, you have valid medical insurance and a good travel insurance policy. Should an accident occur medical insurance will help with the cost of treatment and travel insurance will get you back home.

Travelling during the Holiday Season is a popular way to spend the holidays. There are many destinations in North America to choose from.

During the holiday there are many people who want to travel away to somewhere different. One popular destination is New York City. In New York, Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is what typically kicks of the city into holiday mode. This is followed by various activities you can do such as catching a Broadway show, skate at Rockefeller center, watch the lighting of the Christmas tree, or just absorb the snow lined trees at Central Park or the carolers in the streets.

For those who prefer something more active, there is the ski resorts in the Colorado mountains such as Aspen Mountain, Beaver Creek, Breck, Copper Mountain, and Vail. Of course those in California may wish to stay closer to home in Lake Tahoe or someplace similar. Those wanting something different might want to try going up to Whistler, BC Canada where the mountain has been named one of the top ski destinations in North America for many years. Of course, this future Olympic city will be hosting the 2010 Olympics and it has many quaint shops and sights to see.

Las Vegas is another place where you can enjoy the glitz and glamour over the holidays. Many hotels offer great meals and room rates over the holiday season too. Someplace even hotter would be Hawaii, a favourite among American holiday travellers.

Of course there are other great destinations such as San Francisco, Walt Disney World, Napa Valley, etc. So this holiday season you should considering packing your luggage and getting out and see other parts of the country.

For people who have underlying kidney or heart problems, the dehydration from diarrhea can be life-threatening.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates which countries have safe drinking water. Countries are rated by risk – high, intermediate and low -

– High risk: Africa, Mexico and Central America, most of Asia and the Middle East, especially the rural areas. Hepatitis A is a concern in Russia.

– Intermediate: South Africa, Southern and Eastern Europe.

– Low risk: US, Canada, Japan, Northern Europe and Australia.

To Stay Safe -

– Drink bottled water, but inspect it first. In some countries, a container of bottled water costs $4 or more. Unscrupulous vendors may refill empties with tap water. Always check that the factory seal is intact. Buy carbonated water if available – it’s harder to fake.

– Wipe bottles and cans dry before drinking. Bottled and canned beverages may be kept cold in tubs filled with ice water. Moisture on the outside may contain organisms that can get into your mouth when you drink. Of course, don’t add ice cubes to beverages unless you’re sure they are made from uncontaminated water.

– Use bottled water for brushing your teeth. Also stand your toothbrush upright between brushing so that it isn’t contaminated with water from the sink.

– Drink bottled water on cruise ships and airplanes. Nonbottled water could be contaminated. Coffee and tea, made with boiling water, should be safe.

– Sterilize your water by boiling. Put the water in a clean pot, bring it to a rolling boil, then remove it from the heat and let it cool. Transfer to a sterilized container. Boiling is the most reliable way to kill most disease-causing organisms.

– Use a water-filtration bottle. This can protect you from bacteria, protozoa and lead. Some also filter viruses, including hepatitis A. Check out the product label.

– Beware of swimming. Swimming in the ocean is generally safe, since few bacteria and parasites can survive in the saltwater. But lakes and other bodies of fresh water can have high levels of contamination, and some organisms pass directly thru the skin.

Showering and toweling off soon after swimming will assist in removal of parasites before they have a chance to burrow through the skin. Wearing swimming shoes can protect you from parasites and puncture wounds.

Well maintained and chemically treated swimming pools generally are safe.

The prospect of traveling to a foreign country for a holiday is always excited, yet one should never let the minor details get in the way of having a good time. Considerations like type of plugs to use in outlets, keeping necessary paperwork current, and what to pack and what to leave behind are hopefully decided well in advance, so you can relax and enjoy this experience. Most of all, one should consider how to handle finances while away.

Currency exchange can be a tricky business, particularly in this day of the wavering dollar value as it relates to the foreign markets. Oftentimes when traveling, friends strive to hang onto American dollars to make transactions easier for them. Especially when traveling to Canada, Mexico, Jamaica, and other Caribbean islands where the American dollar is valued, some may find it simpler to negotiate purchases with merchants who will accept American cash. One advantage to this is that no extra fees are taken as they would be were you to withdraw foreign money from an ATM machine, and if you are a good judge on the value of souvenirs you may not feel as though you are being cheated.

However, not every foreign country is as accommodating. In Europe and Asia, you may find some places will not accept a Lincoln for that pint of ale or bag of chips. It becomes inevitable then that you must exchange your cash and keep track of its worth.

The question arises then, where to exchange the money? Is it more economical to obtain necessary cash in the US, or try a bank in a foreign country? Are hotels a better source, or specialized exchange offices? The answer is not always simple to pin down, as the fluctuation of the dollar varies too much. The simplest solution one can offer is to constantly study the exchange rate of the country you plan to visit. For the few weeks before you leave the country, check the daily rates online to determine how much your American dollar will be worth on foreign soil.

Determine how much ready cash you think you will need for your trip, though it is prudent not to carry more than a few hundred dollars regardless of where you go. Travelers checks, though rarely seen or advertised these days, are always handy to have in the event of loss or theft, whereas cash is more difficult to reclaim in such a situation. Once arrived, exchange a small amount at the airport immediately for incidentals (a newspaper, drink, or transportation fare), then inquire with your hotel’s concierge about nearby exchange offices and banks. Compare the current rates and make your decision from there.

Depending upon where you travel, most ATMs will accept American bank and debit cards. Look for matching symbols and look for machines associated with banks. Ultimately you may pay an exchange fee, and bank machines may be easier to negotiate. Keep track of everything you buy, and don’t forget to enjoy yourself as you shop.

It is a hard fact that obtaining travel insurance for seniors can be more difficult than one could ever imagine. Before a person hit that 55 years age mark, one could avail of travel insurance without having to go through so much hassle. But as you get older, this becomes more difficult to accomplish, especially when you are availing of a medical and life insurance policy. The need for insurance coverage rises as you age, but this on the other hand means more risk for the insurance companies; and this is the bad part that we all have to admit. All you need to do is simply try harder, and it would be better to start looking for travel insurance a few months before your scheduled trip to make traveling abroad less risky and more comfortable for you.

When you finally do have that insurance policy that you need, it would be better to go for a multi-trip plan to save you from going through that hassle all over again. It is worth the extra fees if you will be traveling, regardless of the duration, for more than one in a period of a year.

Keep in mind that your age should not be a reason to just settle for a lacking insurance policy. Age should not be a factor to allow yourself to be discriminated; travel and get on that vacation of your dreams with peace of mind, get travel insurance and enjoy your life while you still can.
