The volcanic island of Lanzarote may be small, but it has a surprising number of unique tourist attractions. Several of which reflect its unusual history and culture, such as the area of Timanfaya National Park where the longest eruptions ever recorded in the eighteenth century took place.

The warm dry climate meant that historically cacti were amongst the most productive crops that could be grown. The tunera cactus was cultivated for the cochineal beetles that thrived on this plant. And fittingly, it is close to the largest number of cacti fields that the Cactus Garden has been created.

These two centres of interest were both dreamed up by the Lanzarote artist and architect César Manrique. Whose main aim was to help the island to embrace tourism without having to accept the more destructive aspects of this kind of development.

And the results of Manrique’s careful planning are still much in evidence today. Many holidaymakers are blown away by the attractions he devised. And once they have discovered one or two, many can’t resist visiting every site that he has been associated with.
This is a testament to his imaginative powers, as many visitors staying in one of the quality holiday villas in Lanzarote can find it difficult to drag themselves away from the pool.

Once visitors are mobile though, there is every reason to explore the island from one end to the other. Especially as car hire in Lanzarote is exceptionally reasonable in price as is the petrol. When this is combined with quiet roads and amazing scenery, there is little excuse not to get out and do some sightseeing.

Amongst his most noteworthy creations is the Mirador del Rio. Designed as a restaurant originally, it hangs over the cliff edge at the very northern end of the island. Where it commands incredible views of the neighbouring island of La Graciosa.

Lanzarote has long been popular with those seeking the sun, as it is one of the few destinations within Europe that offers year round good weather. And with only a four hour flight time, many tourists come back for more holidays in Lanzarote , year after year.

So it is a mistake to think of the island as just a beach holiday destination, as there is plenty to see and numerous activities to get involved in, including a huge range of sports. Which is precisely what Manrique hoped to achieve when he formulated the alternative plan for the future of Lanzarote.
